
There are beloved and accomplished athletes returning home to play before family and friends, an ownership group that includes established, successful businessmen and women, as well as star power from the worlds of sports and entertainment.
And there are eager fans...lots and lots of fans.
The Denver Summit FC (football club) begins play Saturday in San Jose, California against Bay FC. The newest franchise in the National Women's Soccer League, the Summit, led by international sensation Lindsay Heaps, who attended Golden High School, thinks it can contend for a championship in its inaugural season. It's already proven a winner at the box office -- more than 50,000 tickets have been sold for its March 28 home opener against the Washington Spirit at Empower Field at Mile High, a league record.
Melanie Anzidei, a soccer correspondent for the sports website "The Athletic," spoke with Colorado Matters about the team's debut.
